  1. The earliest inhabitants of Romania were the Proto-Thracians and
  2. the Dacians, who merged to form the Dacian Kingdom, which from
  3. 106 AD to 271 AD was occupied by Rome.  The people and language
  4. during that time were Romanized.  The two principalities of
  5. Wallachia and Moldavia, dominated by Turkey, were united in 1859
  6. and became Romania in 1861.  In 1877 Romania declared
  7. independence from Turkey and became a Kingdom in 1881 under Carol
  8. I.  In 1886, Romania became a constitutional monarchy with a
  9. bicameral legislature.  In 1941, Romania allied itself with
  10. Germany against the U.S.S.R and in 1944 the Premier was
  11. overthrown by King Michael and Romania joined the Allies.  With
  12. Soviet Army occupation after World War II, a Communist State was
  13. declared on December 30, 1947 and the King was forced to
  14. abdicate.  Land and all industries were nationalized.  After
  15. 1959, Soviet troops have not been permitted to enter the country. 
  16. Internal politics are repressive, the country has become
  17. industrialized but lags in consumer goods and personal freedoms. 
  18. In March 1977 a major earthquake struck Bucharest killing over
  19. 1,300 people and causing extensive damage to buildings and
  20. industry.                    @
