The earliest inhabitants of Romania were the Proto-Thracians and
the Dacians, who merged to form the Dacian Kingdom, which from
106 AD to 271 AD was occupied by Rome. The people and language
during that time were Romanized. The two principalities of
Wallachia and Moldavia, dominated by Turkey, were united in 1859
and became Romania in 1861. In 1877 Romania declared
independence from Turkey and became a Kingdom in 1881 under Carol
I. In 1886, Romania became a constitutional monarchy with a
bicameral legislature. In 1941, Romania allied itself with
Germany against the U.S.S.R and in 1944 the Premier was
overthrown by King Michael and Romania joined the Allies. With
Soviet Army occupation after World War II, a Communist State was
declared on December 30, 1947 and the King was forced to
abdicate. Land and all industries were nationalized. After
1959, Soviet troops have not been permitted to enter the country.
Internal politics are repressive, the country has become
industrialized but lags in consumer goods and personal freedoms.
In March 1977 a major earthquake struck Bucharest killing over
1,300 people and causing extensive damage to buildings and
industry. @
